We are on a mission
to convert curious minds to confident birders
As quickly, easily, and enjoyably as possible
I grew up with birds.
Both of my parents earned PhDs from the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and spent hours in the field studying birds. Our home was packed with scientific papers, massive bird books, and reams of bird checklists.
But early on I realized birding wasn’t for me.
It was plain hard — heavy binoculars, massive tape recorders, giant books organized for scientists, not beginning birders. It felt laborious and frustrating.
So I stepped away.
Then in 2018 something big changed.
As someone drawn to technology, I discovered two game-changing apps (eBird and Merlin) that made birding way more accessible, enjoyable and easy. You didn’t need heavybird books or tape recorders or paper check lists.
All you needed was your phone.
Since I made that discovery, I’ve logged over 5000 eBird checklists, posted hundreds of bird photos, and tracked more than 1000 species across three continents.
My big insight was this: I had always been mildly curious about birds and nature.
What held me back wasn’t curiosity — it lack of confidence. Once technology bridged that gap, I was hooked.
That is why BirderPlace was launched. To help curious people like you quickly move from
Curious (“That’s a cool bird, I wonder what it is”)
to
Confident (“I love knowing what these birds are!”).
Through welcoming walks, simple lessons, and playful challenges we build new-birder confidence quickly and locally —first in St Pete, Florida and eventually anywhere you are.
From Curious to Confident Birder in one walk. Then a Lifetime.
